Description of work

This shield was made for Malton School, and commemorates a former student, Sheila Pratt, who attended the school in the 1940s, and left a legacy to the school in her will.

The school changed from four houses to five in 2018, and re-named its houses, using four of the names used in the early days of Malton Grammar School. The design is based on the Yorkshire Rose, appropriate for a Yorkshire school which has the rose as part of its badge, and also appropriate for a five house system, one house per "petal".

The large shield is 16" in diameter, with a second shield within at about 9" diameter. It is made in sycamore, well suited to the pyrography used to add the details. The five house colours are painted in acrylic.

To record the overall winner each year, a small band will be coloured in the winning House colours. The trophy has capacity to record winners for 36 years int this way, after which some other inventive woodturner will devise a way to continue, as it is unlikely I will still be operating age 98, at least not on the present scale!

Six smaller shields were also made, using the centrepiece as their template. These will record the winning house in each year group.
